A shared stage for new and emerging voices

WRITE UP started in 2025 with a simple idea, to crowdfund a new writing event that pays writers fairly and on time. It’s a space for new writing to be seen, heard and valued. Where writers at every stage can share their work, find their people and grow in confidence.

Diversity of human voices matters now more than ever

Humans have shared stories for millennia, like us, do you believe human authored storytelling still has huge value in today’s digital age? If your answer was YES, here’s the exciting thing, everyone who attends is part of the magic of WRITE UP. Let me tell you more.

WRITE UP is a writer-led platform building new spaces for underrepresented voices in literature. It is free to enter, and we pay the writers selected to read their original stories to a live audience at a literary event in London.

You have until midnight on Sunday 6 September 2026 to enter 500-1000 words of original writing in prose, poetry or dramatic monologue on the theme of VOICE. It can be something you’ve written for WRITE UP or a piece you’ve already completed, as long as it fits the criteria.

Submissions Theme for 2026: VOICE

Submissions for WRITE UP 2026 are now open and we’re inviting you to share a piece of work inspired by the theme of VOICE.

We’re looking for pieces that explore what it means to find your voice, lose your voice, reclaim your voice, or listen to the voices of others to showcase diversity of story and storytellers.

“Voices from the care system are still rare in the writing world, so being invited into this community feels powerful and necessary. It reminds me that our stories matter and deserve to be heard.” (WRITE UP 2025)

Submissions should be between 500 and 1,000 words, although poetry may vary in length. When you think of why VOICE matters what excites you?

A moment a voice was heard above the noise
Revealing an untold story or forgotten history
A space within the silence
The melodrama of identity, family or belonging
Discovering place through the senses
Stepping into a magical, mystical or spooky experience
Reworking an old tale from a new point of view
Exchanging words spoken or written between adversaries
Satire or uncovering a political dilemma

The choice is yours. These are a few prompts if helpful.

We welcome memoir, personal essay, poetry, short fiction and dramatic monologue from new writers, emerging writers and professional writers. Work can be original work or extract ideally around 6-8 minutes long.

Writers are also invited to choose a piece of music that sets the tone for their piece to share with the audience after their reading.

We are looking for words that come alive when read to an audience. Writers should consider how well their piece will work in a medium-sized venue.

Judging Criteria

We know choosing work is a responsibility. Our aim is not to find one “perfect” piece, but to create a night that celebrates a rich mix of voices and experiences.

WRITE UP aims to create a platform for a diverse range of writers in background, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability, age and access to writing education. We’ll select a mix of established, emerging and new voices to create a rich and varied line-up.

Selection panel will consider:

Voice and originality
Emotional and intellectual impact
Clarity and coherence
Relevance to theme
Performance potential

We’ll also consider how each piece fits within the overall night with attention to diversity, inclusion and community engagement.

Please only submit your original work and not AI generated content.

WRITE UP is created and funded by writers for writers. Please respect the time, cost and energy writers put into their submissions, the selection panel, and the donors and audiences who attend.

The theme is voice. We want to hear your unique voice, your point of view on the world. WRITE UP is founded on the principle that writing has value, please ensure your participation aligns with that belief.

We’re hosting a Summer Party in London, and you’re invited.

It doesn’t matter whether you’ve been before, there’s always room for one more person. WRITE UP brings together new writers, emerging writers, published writers and people who love stories.

This time last year we were gearing up to do our first ever WRITE UP. This year I wanted to host a WRITE UP Summer Salon but work, family and trying to figure out how to fund it were proving barriers. Then inspired me by saying why don’t we have our own event that anyone can come to in a park.

Immediately I contacted and who are doing so much to help me keep WRITE UP going and evolving.

What does the future hold for WRITE UP?

What does the future hold for WRITE UP? I’ve been sitting with this question for a while now, so I wanted to bring you into the thinking rather than announce something neat and finished.

WRITE UP: Christmas Edition was incredible.
The energy. The warmth. The presence.

It was one of those evenings that feels like one of life’s beautiful moments. I was spellbound listening to the writers read their work, and filled with gratitude, and a real sense of connection. An huge open-hearted thank you to everyone who came, and the deepest of love for and my fellow Judges; reading everyone’s work was the greatest of pleasures - we’re so lucky to do this as a little team and to have be kind Host, making sure all our guests were looked after.

You see, it’s all about the people. When you take part, you become part of the magic. When you pledge, submit, or come along, it’s like opening a door to human beings who feel like old friends, even when in reality, it’s been no time at all. But what do writers care about rules like time, when we’re in the business of turning thought into word, and dream into action?

Mentoring with WRITE UP: Studio

Thanks to everyone who pledged during the Crowdfunding campaign and the matchfunding from Hammersmith and Fulham Council we had a wee bit left in the kitty, so we used it to create five mentoring places for writers whose submissions captured the judges’ imaginations and had been long listed.

Throughout January, Tom, Emma and I have been working with writers and Asquith individually and as a group — to develop their work. We also shared a beautiful writers’ workshop day based on the writers’ circles a couple of weeks ago. This work is part of creating not just a platform for writers, but meaningful developmental support too.

They’ll be reading funny, heart-warming and dramatic stories at Barons Court Theatre, London at 2.30pm Saturday 31 January. Do come and hear their stories and be part of this vibrant creative storytelling event. Pay-what-you-can tickets: https://app.lineupnow.com/event/write-up-studio-2

There will be a short Q&A after the readings to discuss the process and maybe ideas of where WRITE UP could go next. This is where I’d really keen to talk to you.

What does the future hold for WRITE UP?

WRITE UP began as a simple idea: a platform where writers got paid to read their work and an opportunity for us to come together as a creative community. It’s actually only been six months since the first WRITE UP in July. I didn’t know if it would work, if anyone would come or if it would be a one time thing.

I don’t want WRITE UP to become something I run on autopilot, or something you attend out of obligation. The whole point has always been intention: choosing to show up, choosing to read, choosing to make space for each other’s words. It’s here to create something that renews our confidence, connection and sense of purpose. And doing WRITE UP: Studio mentoring has been such privilege. I simply love it, and I’ve got all sorts of ideas buzzing around my head when I should be writing my next book.

So, whatever we do next, for me it’s got to be connected to the other work I’m doing; which is supportive writing practice and writers’ circles. They nurture writers but they also are an essential part of my writing development too.

I’ve had so many amazing suggestions of what people would like this year, but truthfully, and please remind me of this, the first question I need to ask myself before creating anything else is, how does this nourish my writing? Organising an event like WRITE UP takes up so much time and energy, so I need to think how to build sustainably and in community.

If you’ve been part of WRITE UP already, thank you. You’ve helped shape it far more than you probably realise.

If you’ve been watching from the edges, curious but unsure, know that I’m holding the door open. It might look like nothing is happening for a little while but it will be renewing under the surface. Reflective practice is so important, and it’s hard to do if you’re an manifesting Gemini who has too many ideas a day (talking about me here).

Without those gatherings I wouldn’t have had the space, inspiration and connections to make any of it happen, so thank you to everyone who has come to those and shared so openly.

Océane Meftah

will be reading Christmas Steals My Birthday which offers an imaginative blend of personal memory and magical realism to capture the universal frustration of birthdays overshadowed by Christmas. It’s humorous, heartfelt and vividly inhabited.

Jessica Montoya

will be reading How The Other Half Unwraps. Her intimate voice feels like being let in on a secret. She uses sharp observation, cultural contrast and self-deprecating humour to turn family rituals into something revealing, funny and deeply human.

“It’s been a great opportunity to hone my craft and improve my writing. I've received helpful feedback and support from my mentor, Amy Beeson, and my cohort that has really helped transform my piece. I can't wait to share it,” said Jessica.

Helen Poore

will be reading Gathered around a lantern. She writes with a calm, attentive humanity. Her story is anchored by a striking, atmospheric image that draws us into a moment of shared vulnerability.

“I was surprised and delighted to be asked to join. Meeting everyone and getting feedback from them was daunting but the day we spent together was fun and the process has made a huge difference to my writing,” said Helen.

Jennifer Granville

will be reading You Shall Go To The Ball. She writes with flair, confidence and theatrical spark. A lively, vivid and unapologetic voice.

“It’s been a challenge and a pleasure. Having to write a short piece, knowing it would be performed rather than read on the page, was the challenge - being mentored by Tom Wentworth was the pleasure! Thank you to Amy for making this happen. It’s been the high point of my time on Substack!” said Jennifer.

Jemma Asquith

Asquith will be reading The Mummy Star. She writes about grief with extraordinary sensitivity and grace. It’s a luminous piece that honours love, loss and the fragile aftermath of both.

“This experience has been such an opportunity for me as a beginner writer. Working with Tom - my mentor and sharing ideas and feedback from other writers has been invaluable. It has inspired me to develop and use my writer’s voice to share my experiences, imagination and stories of us extraordinary humans,” said Jemma.

“It’s been such a joy to be involved with WRITE UP from the outset - as a participant, then a judge, and now as a mentor,” said . “Supporting the evolution of someone’s writing is a true privilege and being able to partner with nascent writers particular is just so rewarding.”

Writer, judge and mentor said: “I’m thrilled to be a mentor for this unique initiative. Building on the superb success of what Amy has created with WRITE UP.”

“This programme brings a mix of mentoring and community to more writers than ever before. Tailored to their individual needs and voices - it’s a superb example of what writers really need. I’m loving working with my mentees and can’t wait to see them shine at the end of the month,” said Tom.

You’ll get the chance to ask all the writers involved about the process in a Q&A at the event or over drinks in the bar. It’s a celebration of our growing London new writing community as well as the writers and their fabulous stories.

Alissa Mears - Mother Christmas

is originally from Virginia. A London-based writer and teacher, she was recently in London Library’s Emerging Writers Programme where she finished a collection of personal essays. She is now in the midst of a memoir about friendship, imagination and E.M. Forster.

“I’ve been thinking a lot about hospitality recently, how the very nature of opening a door to another person can shift my perspective, my expectations. Write Up London, its invitation to people at all points in their writing careers, is a form of generous hospitality: a welcome to share in the word and the world.”

Alissa Mears

Alissa explained that while her relationship looks significantly different from her parents’, around the holidays she is spirited back to the mid-twentieth century.

The judges saw straight away that every mum listening will recognise the extra mental and physical load in Mother Christmas. It’s light, comic and beautifully wry touch will keep us all laughing at Alissa’s sharp observations on family life that cut right to the truth.

Maeve Dineen - Three To Delete

Maeve is an Irish Londoner with a long history of keeping lots of writing on file, somewhere, and you can connect with her at . She explained that giving the gift of technology at Christmas time got her thinking about spending time with family, and the conversations we keep alive through memory.

“After taking a long walk off a short common (Putney) to catastrophic effect (broken ankle) I finally managed to get something off paper and online to the wonderful Amy Beeson and I am delighted to be back in the land of the walking and the talking, and to be a part of the very lovely Write Up Festival.”

Eva Lydon - Stay Away From The Corners

is a writer, mother and multi-passionate creative, running a micro business from home. is where she shares insights as a 40-something, perimenopausal, ADHD parent. She writes poetry, essays, memoir and children’s picture books. Eva is on a mission to shine a light on the messy parts of life, and break down the walls of the ‘comparison trap’ we all too often find ourselves in.

“Having attended the last ‘Write Up’ as a guest and finding it such an impactful and enriching experience, I’m super excited to be chosen as one of the writers to read at this poignant event. Kate Morse - Christmas Spirit

Kate Morse studied English Literature and Creative Writing at Lancaster University and now works in academic publishing, overseeing philosophy and linguistics journals at Routledge, Taylor & Francis. She is an active member of several writing groups and is currently developing a collection of short stories.

The judges were struck by the atmospheric power and emotional subtlety of Christmas Spirit. Its blend of memory, haunting imagery and Christmas-homecoming creates a tender and cinematic tale. We were drawn to its eerie yet intimate lyrical prose, strong sense of place and the sensory magical realism it manifests.

Sasha Neal - Christmas Gift

is a writer, audio-visual content producer and oral historian. She has created films for organisations including the Arvon Foundation, Pop Up Projects, Booktrust and the Poetry Society. Sasha recently co-produced the Who Cares? oral history project, recording and editing a podcast series about the life stories of care home residents. She is currently writing a book about families’ experiences of the social care system and on Dementia’s Daughter.

Sasha’s inspiration was the Christmas that marked the end of a long struggle to move her mum out of a substandard care home, and the bittersweet memories of that time, very much present as another festive season approaches.

Holly Bailie - The Forever Christmas Tree of Number 92

is a career/life coach, mindfulness facilitator and aspiring writer. focuses on well-being, mindfulness and personal growth. Her itchy feet have taken her off to live in seven countries so far and she dreams of someday being a digital nomad with her three adorable Indonesian street kitties.

Holly told us that she strongly believes in the power of the arts. “It’s been so exciting to see WRITE UP develop from a seed to a movement under Amy’s tender care, formed around the principle that writers should get paid for their work. Listening to writers read at the first WRITE UP, I felt a whole range of emotions well up, spurred by the diverse creativity of the pieces. I can’t wait to hear what stories are told this time around. Come join us for a night to remember!”

The judges enjoyed Holly’s heartfelt tale of a family’s quirks and the meanings we attach to the things we keep. She invites us over the threshold of Number 92 wit charm and clarity.

Rachael B. - I’ll Never Cancel Christmas

started out on the London spoken word scene in the early 2000s. Following the publication of first poetry collection Sauce Will Thicken on Standing , she’s now working on a new collection. From the Ashes is a co-creation of poetry that serves as a therapeutic intervention, with and for women who have experienced emotional and/or physical abuse, to empower them to re-write their stories.

Rachael initially wrote a short story but then the theme of Christmas reminded her of an early childhood memory and of the little things we say to children out of frustration - often without thinking - and how they seem big at the time and stay with us. Also what Christmas can mean to people who aren’t religious.

“I didn’t share any of my work for years (because of imposter syndrome, which still comes and goes - I have a few poems about this!) and events like this are what helped me see that I really am a writer and that people want to hear what I have to say, and take something from it. Amy holds a beautiful safe space for everyone, and the last event was super diverse and inclusive. It’s wonderful to see new writers finding a supportive community in which to share their work.”

The judges recognised Rachael’s observational eye and that this piece comes alive in performance. It moves from childhood shame to adult reflection, showing how family, forgiveness and shared love reveal the true magic of Christmas.

WRITE UP: Christmas Edition is a new writing event that offers a paid platform for writers to share their work live on Saturday 13 December 2025 in London.

We’re looking for a diversity of stories and storytellers on the theme of Christmas in poetry, prose or dramatic monologue. Writers should consider how well their piece will work in a medium-sized venue read to a live audience.

Pieces should be up to 500 words (if you go a bit over don’t worry).

We’re inviting both extracts and original work including:

Ghost stories
Homecomings
Comedy
Family drama
Memoir
Winter tales
Folklore and myth
Modern takes on classic Christmas stories
Fireside tales
Seasons
Family recipes and food

Pieces should ideally be 5–8 minutes long to read aloud (500 words). They can be previously published and performed as long as they are your original work and you have copyright and permission to do so. Your work will not be shared publicly without your written permission.

Writers are also invited to choose one or two pieces of music to play after their reading.

You need to be free to read on the evening of Saturday 13 December 2025 in London. (We don’t currently have the funding to pay for travel and accommodation. Readers are responsible for arranging their own travel).

Judging

WRITE UP aims to create a platform for a diverse range of writers in background, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability, age and access to writing education.

The judges and will select a mix of established, emerging and new voices to create a rich and varied line-up.

Clarity and coherence
Relevance to theme
Performance potential

is an award-winning author, wild swimmer, and tea sommelier. Emma’s reflective, sensory-rich writing explores belonging, resilience, and the quiet magic of connection.

is an acclaimed playwright and memoirist, whose fearless, funny, and emotionally truthful work has captivated BBC audiences and theatre-goers alike.

is an author, and the founder & host of WRITE UP, as well as meet ups and writers’ circles. Her work explores love, loss, identity and the transformative power of storytelling. She brings her deep experience as a writer, facilitator and creative leader for community-driven spaces.

Hello, I’m Amy Beeson and it was my honour to host WRITE UP in London this summer. That beautiful night was a celebration of voice, courage and community.

We can be proud that:

10 writers shared their work
60 people came
+100 people pledged.

Together we created something rare; a grassroots crowdfunded event funded by people who cherish the written word. It was a living, breathing creative but political act. Every writer who read was paid for their work. It was a clear message to funders’ about how much we value stories and the people who create them.

It was not sentiment, it was substance.

It was not about creating sympathy, it was to drive sustainability.

Joanna Milne

Nair’s melodic tender piece was an aching portrait of love, language and loss. She explored how memory and language become lifelines to the communities we carry with us in her piece Vatsalyam (Familal Love). I don’t like filling in funding forms, they are very boring, but totally worth it if we can get our event matchfunded again. If you supported or came to WRITE UP in July in London, we’re back for a Christmas Edition. Maybe you didn’t get round to it, or didn’t know about it, it doesn’t matter.

Everyone is welcome to the party.

I’ve been going through the feedback to create a festive event that brings our creative community together, creates a platform for new writing and pays the writers who read their work.

When is it?

Put 6.30pm Saturday 13 December 2025 in West London in your diaries now for WRITE UP: Christmas Edition.

Hopefully having two months to fundraise and three months to plan it will help enormously. Doing it in five weeks last time was a lot.

It’s only through your support and belief in creating and supporting our community that events like this can happen. Please donate early if you can.

If you want to do a little each month to reach a tier, that’s fine, I can add up the accumulative totals. Sometimes, it’s easier to give £10 x 3 than £30 in one go, I get that.
