Writing in Progress
Hello, I’m Amy Beeson, an author from West London. Writing in Progress is our monthly Writers’ Circle in Hammersmith, London, W6 (welcoming writers from across the globe). Booking is now open for Wednesday 10 September 2025; it’s an intimate supportive group of no more than eight.
This is a super friendly and supportive group that will add value to your writing practice. I know, because it already has to mine. Book your spot
Here’s what our Writers’ Group thought…
“The space was very nice: very quiet, which I love, and comfortable.”
We gather in this peaceful library room around a large square table with a cuppa, some pastries and our notebooks and pens.
“The best for me was the shared experience: although some of you are accomplished writers, it felt like a nice circle where, although I am very shy, I felt confident enough to share and speak.”
Who’s it for?
We have experienced writers through to people writing for the first time, and everyone is welcome. We all gain so much from listening to how other people receive our work, learning what ideas resonate with readers.
Some people bring an extract from a longer piece, or a pitch to test, perhaps a first draft of flash fiction, non-fiction book ideas or an outline of characters they want to shape a story around. The beautiful thing is all the voices are so different which I find utterly fascinating.
You don’t have to be from London. Some people travel into town to join us, and others literally make us a stop on their UK visit. It’s London, the door is always open.
When you sign up you’ll get a few gentle emails prompting you on how to prepare, and I’ll guide you through the whole process.
How does it work?
Before we meet, I’ll ask you to share a work in progress piece (an article, bit of prose, flash-fiction, play extract, whatever you like). This will be shared with the group so you can get some feedback from the other writers. It’s very supportive and to me listening to how people respond is golden.
We’ll discuss what caught our interest, or reflections on character, suspense or plot. If you’ve never been part of a writers’ group, don’t worry, I’ll send some notes on things to consider when reading other people’s work, and questions you might have for your early readers.
What will I get out of this?
The idea for this format has grown from the Meet Ups I host. A lot of people have really enjoyed the open mic part of the Meet Ups and wanted an opportunity to go a little deeper into being part of a writers’ circle.
I’ve always enjoy being part of a writers’ group, it’s a great way to build up a network of support, and who knows, you may meet future collaborators.
Do I have to read my work out loud?
This is entirely optional. I know some writers really want to practice reading to an audience, but others find it daunting yet still would really benefit from discussion and feedback on their work. The week in advance submission gives everyone an opportunity for reflection without the pressure of performing. If you’re keen to read your work after the circle, why not come along to the next Substack Writers Meet Up. Get in touch for the next date.
Is this a writing class?
No, it’s not a writing class. Though we will most likely touch on technique, your writer’s toolbox and ideas for development. The format is driven by the preoccupations and needs of the writers there on the day. I wasn’t planning on doing writing prompts but if any group members want some that’s fine, I can easily put some together.
I do offer writing tutorials in groups up to four, if that’s what you’re looking for.
Offer
Annual and Founding Subscribers get 20% off and priority booking. If you’re a paid member or you’re thinking, “I wasn't but what a great opportunity,” DM and I’ll get you booked in.
I’m In! How do I book?
Fantastic. You can book for Wednesday 10 September on Eventbrite for £46.21
It’s really valuable to have a quiet private space and this small library and this group going to be the start of something special.
Some of the places have already gone, so if you want to come, I’d advise booking sooner rather than later. Also, it’ll give you more time to prepare.
Once you’re booked in, I will send you more details about the venue and have a chat about what you’re thinking you’d like to bring to the group. If you’re not certain don’t worry we’ve got time to figure it out. It will be in Hammersmith which has great public transport links.
Any more questions please let me know in the comments or DM.
Oh no, I can’t make it on 10 September, are there more?
Yes, I’ve already taken some booking for the Writers’ Circles on 8 October, 5 November 2025 and 14 January 2026. If you want to bag a spot, please get in touch.
I’ve booked! Taking the risk as I’d love to be there 💛
Hi Amy, looking forward to joining you on the 9th. Warm wishes, Rohini
