Writing in Progress Meet Up
Come to a Morning Writers Circle in London. Share your work and discuss ideas for development on 7 May 2025.
Our first Morning Writers Circle called Writing in Progress will be getting together from 10am-12pm on Wednesday 7 May in London.
This is a super friendly and supportive way to develop your writing and communications toolbox at your own pace.
How does it work?
Before we meet I’ll ask you to share a work in progress piece (an article, chapter, flash-fiction whatever you like). This will be shared with the group so you can get some feedback from the other writers. It’ll be a small supportive group.
The first half of our circle will be focused on discussing creative work; like what caught our interest, or reflections on character, suspense or plot. If you’ve never been part of a writers’ group, don’t worry, I’ll send some notes on things to consider when reading other people’s work, and questions you might have for your early readers.
The second half of the meeting will be discussing topics around development. That might be writing, communications or promotion. I’ll invite members of the group to suggest some issues they’re keen to get into and put some discussion topics together.
What will I get out of this?
The idea for this format has grown from the Meet Ups I host. A lot of people have really enjoyed the open mic part of the Meet Ups and wanted an opportunity to go a little deeper into being part of a writers circle.
I’ve had three books published by HarperCollins and I’m also a Brand and Communications Consultant (See my posts on Branding 101). During our Substack Meet Ups some writers really value when we’ve touched on topics like branding, publicity and pitching, and wanted the opportunity to dive into these topics a little more. So, this your chance to bring some of those questions and ideas to the table.
I always enjoy being part of a writers group, it’s a great way to build up a network of support, and who knows, you may meet future collaborators.
Do I have to read my work
This is entirely optional. I know some writers really want to practice reading to an audience but others find it daunting, yet still would really benefit from discussion and feedback on their work. The week in advance submission gives everyone an opportunity for reflection without the pressure of performing. If you’re keen to read your work after the circle, why not come along to the next Substack Writers Meet Up on 12 May. (See events page).
Is this a writing class?
No, it’s not writing class. Though we will most likely touch on technique, your writers toolbox and ideas for development. The format is driven by the preoccupations and needs of the writers there on the day. I wasn’t planning on doing writing prompts but if any group members want some that’s fine, I can easily put some together.
If you’re looking for a writing workshop, check out my Writing and Breathwork Workshop on 21 June and Memoir Writing Workshop and get in touch to find out about future dates or have a look at the events page.
I can’t do mornings in the week
The Substack Meet Ups in West London are in the evening on a weekday, and the Writing and Breathwork Workshops are on early Saturday afternoon. I’ve had quite a few requests for a weekday morning, for people who aren’t keen on evenings. If you can’t make during the day, but could do an evening or weekend please get in touch and if there’s enough interest I’ll try and do an alternative date for the writers circle.
I know quite a few people have gotten in touch to ask if I could do events online. I might in the future for paid subscribers, but what I think makes these writing gatherings really special is connecting in person. If you are a paid subscriber and getting to London isn’t an option, drop me a message and I will add it to my To Do List.
I’m In! How do I book?
Fantastic. You can book on Eventbrite for £37.54 It’s really valuable to have a quiet private space and I’m hoping hiring this small library space will be the start of something special.
Annual Paid and Founding subscribers can get in touch for 20% discount, just drop me a DM.
Once you’re booked I will send you more details about the venue and have a chat about what you’re thinking you’d like to bring to the group. If you’re not certain don’t worry we’ve got time to figure it out. It will be in Hammersmith which has great public transport links.
Any more questions please let me know in the comments or DM.
This is the room we’ll be gathering in. Bring your notebook, pen and a bottle of water and let’s make our morning filled with purpose and community. I’m planning on serving tea, coffee and pastries too.
