Could you help me shape the next Meet Up?

I’m Amy Beeson an author from West London. Last year I started hosting Writers Meet Ups and it has been incredible. Coming together as a creative community over drinks and sharing experiences has been a highlight in my calendar.

What I’ve loved most though is the readings. Listening to diverse writers tell their stories. And I’ve had an idea. I want to create a big summer party that celebrates new writing on the evening of Saturday 19 July 2025 in London, W14 and I need your help.

I’m not going to organise a summer meet up, I’m going to try and make this happen.

WRITE UP

My idea is to give a platform for 8-10 diverse writers to read a short piece.

Each writer picks 2-3 pieces of popular music that are the soundtrack, the mood, the message of that song played by a DJ.

The theme is home and finding your community.

The music provides a breath and is link from artist to artist. It creates a vibe that we all become part of, sharing our stories between stories. Connecting with new people, being part of something special and coming together in person to enjoy the moment.

Welcoming not just writers, but all people who enjoy and want to support the arts and have more grassroots opportunities to hear and celebrate new work.

I’m calling it WRITE UP.

Why Crowdfunding?

I’ve put a Crowdfunding page on Space Hive together. This is the one the council recommended using. Will you help me get this idea off the ground? YES, please go to the project page and sponsor the event.

I’ve decided to try Crowdfunding for the first time for a few reasons. Firstly, I had to go through an application process that tested the idea, the objectives, the benefits and provide a full cost breakdown. Secondly, it’s a secure place to donate your money, it did all the financial checks. Thirdly, it’s a way to get match funding. We could potentially double the money, and I thought that was worth aiming for.

It also means we can increase the net of support. People support projects they care about altruistically and because something is on offer. Both reasons are great. This is all about reach.

Can you help?

All the sponsors will be invited to the event. I will shape it according to how much we raise. I’ve decided to go big and give it the best chance of reaching the most people. That means venue hire, marketing and most importantly of all paying the artists.

I want to give a small fee to each of the artists that performs on the night. As a writer myself I know how rarely that happens, and how we’re expected to do so much for free in the hope of increasing visibility. That means less writers are seen, and less readers get to access the wide range of work being produced.

As part of the funding bid I’ve asked my local council to match fund whatever we can raise. They’ll look at it in early June and the more support I can demonstrate the more likely they’ll be to give us the money and we can make this happen.

What happens next…

I’m aiming high. Maybe we won’t get the ideal room, the photo wall and the DJ. Maybe it’ll be a big summer grassroots party that welcomes writers and readers to come and be part of a welcoming community.
